In the world of medical and laboratory testing, the safe transportation of specimens is of utmost importance. To ensure the integrity of these samples during transit, specialized bags known as 95kPa specimen transport bags are utilized. In this blog post, we will delve into what exactly a 95kPa specimen transport bag is, its purpose, and its significance in maintaining sample quality and safety.

Understanding the 95kPa Standard
The term “95kPa” refers to the pressure rating assigned to a particular type of specimen transport bag. This rating signifies the bag’s ability to withstand a pressure of 95 kilopascals, which is equivalent to approximately 14 pounds per square inch. The 95kPa standard is important because it ensures that the bag can maintain an airtight seal, preventing the leakage of any potentially hazardous materials during transportation.
Purpose and Applications
The primary purpose of a 95kPa specimen transport bag is to provide a secure and protective environment for the safe transportation of biological specimens, such as blood samples, tissue samples, or other potentially infectious materials. These bags are specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements of medical and laboratory regulations.
The use of 95kPa bags is particularly critical when transporting specimens that may contain infectious agents, as they help prevent the release of pathogens into the surrounding environment. By maintaining a high level of integrity, these bags minimize the risk of contamination and ensure the safety of laboratory personnel, healthcare professionals, and the general public.
Design and Features
95kPa specimen transport bags are constructed using specialized materials that meet the required standards for biohazard containment. These bags typically feature a multi-layered design consisting of a durable outer layer and a barrier film inner layer. The barrier film is impermeable to liquids and gases, providing an effective seal against potential leaks.
Additionally, 95kPa bags often incorporate a zip-lock closure system or heat-sealed seams to ensure a secure seal. This design prevents any accidental opening of the bag during transport. Some bags may also include a transparent window for easy identification and documentation of the specimen contained within.
Compliance and Regulations
The use of 95kPa specimen transport bags is governed by strict regulatory guidelines, which vary by country and region. These regulations outline the requirements for packaging, labeling, and handling of biohazardous materials during transportation. Compliance with these regulations is crucial to maintain the integrity of specimens and ensure the safety of individuals involved in the transportation process.
Cenmed’s 95kPa Testing
Cenmed 95kPa Pressure Testing was completed on our 95kPa Biohazard Bag in accordance with standard laboratory practices and referenced test methods by HighQ Testing, LLC.
Test Method: Three (3) test samples were fitted with a needle connected to a compressor and sealed with bag closure. The insertion point was fully sealed to ensure no leakage. A pressure differential of 95kPa was applied for 30 minutes as the samples were observed for leakage/rupture.
Test Results: 95kPa Pressure Test Per ICAO/IATA DGR, Sections 6.3.5 and 5.0.2.9 and Title 49 CFR, Section 178.605:
- Biohazard Bag Sample 1 – PASS
- Biohazard Bag Sample 2 – PASS
- Biohazard Bag Sample 3 – PASS
Conclusion: The tested bags referenced above meet the requirements of ICAO/IATA DGR, Sections 6.3.5 and 5.0.2.9 and Title 49 CFR, Section 178.605.
Date of Report: January 17th, 2023
Conclusion
In the realm of medical and laboratory testing, the 95kPa specimen transport bag plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity and safety of biological specimens during transit. With their ability to withstand pressure, prevent leaks, and contain potentially infectious materials, these bags are essential for protecting laboratory personnel and the wider community. By adhering to regulatory standards and utilizing appropriate transport bags, laboratories can uphold the highest standards of sample quality and safety, ensuring accurate and reliable test results.
